UROLOGY CARE TECHNOLOGY

The Miramichi Regional Hospital Foundation has launched a new Annual Campaign entitled “UROLOGY CARE TECHNOLGY” with a goal to raise $175,000 to purchase two pieces of urology equipment.  Local patients will benefit by receiving the optimum level of care.

The Greenlight Laser is used mostly for non invasive removal of the prostate from the inside and will enable surgeons to perform surgery resulting in virtually no postoperative bleeding, and assist to decrease hospital stay for the patient.

The Urodynamic System is used to evaluate the lower urinary tract system providing patients the benefit of having the tests done locally and receiving immediate care plans.

Miramichi Hospital’s Urologist Dr. Hermen Vonkeman says regarding the Greenlight Laser, “in older men who have voiding problems, the prostate needs to be removed.  This surgery is done with a loupe through the urethra and the patient is admitted for about three days for the bleeding associated with the procedure to stop.  The Greenlight Laser does the same operation with no bleeding and patients go home the same day.  The Greenlight Laser will also help in-patients who are on anti-coagulant treatment which cannot be stopped and risk excessive bleeding with the loupe operation.”

In regards to the Urodynamic System, Vonkeman adds “voiding problems are very common in the general population and increase with age. As well, most in-patients with spinal cord and brain injuries or diseases have or will experience voiding problems.  After diagnosing the problem, the cause needs to be determined by urodynamics.”

“Urodynamics measure the pressure, or absence there-of, generated by the bladder to produce flow, as well as the pressure of the valves during bladder filling and voiding. Currently our patients are sent to Fredericton or Moncton for this test and it can take a few months to receive the results.  It will greatly benefit local patients to have a urodynamic system on-site for immediate care plans” said Vonkeman.

“The Miramichi Regional Hospital Foundation is extremely pleased to commit to assisting the Urologists and staff in their efforts by launching this exciting new annual campaign” said Chairperson Russell Whitney.  “The success of achieving this equipment will assist us in our common goal of enhancing local patient care”.

“The Miramichi Regional Hospital Foundation’s recent Histology – A Little Tissue. A Big Issue campaign has been successfully completed and the new stainer and cover slip equipment is currently in the purchasing process” said Whitney.  “We are very grateful for the wonderful support of our community that assists us in achieving our many goals.”
